Local Self Government in Urban Areas

The Municipal corporations and municipalities are divided into number of specific wards. The elected representatives of the wards are the Councilors, who are responsible for the betterment of the civic amenities and other issues of his ward. The head of the municipalities are the Mayors or the Chairmen. The Panchayats are headed by the elected representatives called the Panchayat Pradhan. These Pradhan's look after the well-being of the village or a number of villages, which fall under their Panchayat area. There are several municipal bodies and numerous Panchayats in the State Government of Haryana.

  • Twelfth Schedule was added to the Indian Constitution through the 74th Amendment to the Constitution.
  • This schedule include 18 subjects which are related to the functions of urban local self government.
  • The urban areas are divided into several wards to form urban local bodies.
  • In Haryana, the system of local self government in urban area is established through 74th Amendment to the Constitution.
  • The election, tenure, reservation, etc in urban local self government is similar to that of Gram Panchayat.
